Layout & grid
Overview of our layout & grid
With help from our layout and grid system we can create simple, clear and balanced layouts in our communications.
Layout system
We have two approaches to our layout system: side-by-side and multiple. These two approaches allow our communications to be simple and informative, expressing our brand in varied but recognisable way.
Side by side
Multiple
Side-by-side
The-side by-side approach allows the brand to be templated easily if we choose to divide layouts. Dividing the communication can create clear space to allow photography, graphic language, type or colour to be the hero in brand touch points.
Step 1 To construct these layouts first create our grid, with the margins and gutters appropriate to the size and medium of communication.
Step 2 Divide the page using the grid as guide but maintain legibility when doing so. Then place the image in the space and add other brand elements to the clear space.
Multiple
The multiple images approach allows us to create more complex and diverse compositions with a side by side layout. To achieve this we simply divide the image section into two and maintain the legibility of the images.
Grid system
Our layouts are built on a 12x12 grid, which allows us to create layouts in a varied but consistent way.
When creating our grid, margins should be chosen to be appropriate to the size and medium of the materials being designed. Then add 12 columns with gutters proportional to the canvas.
Small scale grid
For smaller applications the grid can be reduced to either 4x4 or 3x3. This ensures consistency with our 12x12 grid, and is able to accommodate a small footprint with multiple elements.
